Energy & Environment

CME Ontario runs a number of policy committees that are actively involved in the critical issues that affect the bottom line. Committees provide a forum for members to advance concerns, develop policy positions, advocate for change and network with government officials and other business leaders. CME members discuss global adjustment allocation with the Minister of Energy & Infrastructure

CME met with the Minister of Energy & Infrastructure, Brad Duguid, on April 1st. Click here to view the briefing note that was presented to the Minister. Below is a brief summary of the discussion that followed:

  • Minister acknowledged that a great deal of work had been done on global adjustment allocation.
  • Minister commented that the timeline of June 1st was unlikely given a change in regulation was necessary but acknowledged the urgency of the situation.
  • Minister's staff asked if there was broad support for demand allocation amongst the CME membership.
  • CME responded that there was broad support for demand allocation amongst
  • Minister's staff asked if this would resolve the issue with respect to energy pricing or whether CME would have other "asks"
  • CME member responded that this was not a silver bullet but that this was one tool that would help manufacturers to be more competitive with respect to energy. (Other tools include energy conservation, etc.). Energy policy is a moving target and CME would continue to provide insight and recommendations to the Ministry.
  • Minister acknowledged the importance of base-load generation and mentioned that discussions were ongoing with the Feds about backstopping the nuclear new-build program.
  • Minister also stated that they were aggressively trying to move forward with refurb

Next Steps: CME will continue to engage regularly with the Ministry to ensure these issues move forward.
