WSIB Ergonomists Re-deployed

Published on February 02, 2010

In April of 2009, the Workplace Safety 7 Insurance Board completed its rollout of its new Service Delivery Model. A key component of the new model, according to the WSIB, was the creation of the Return to Work Specialist role to facilitate desired return to work outcomes for workers and employers.

CME recently wrote to the WSIB regarding the rumoured elimination of the Ergonomists’ roles. The WSIB stated that, among some internal changes brought about as a result of the new Model, it is shifting the ergonomic functions into the role of Return to Work Specialist where they expect that their skills and abilities will be utilized and enhanced in order to broaden their influence on early and safe return to work.

The current ergonomists are being offered positions as Return to Work Specialists and WSIB will continue to maintain its capacity to perform ergonomic assessments as necessary. The Ergonomists transferring to their new roles will retain their professional designations. They are currently transitioning into their new roles and the position is expected to be phased out by the end of March 2010.

The WSIB has stated that it has not been able to communicate this change before now as it was an internal issue that necessitated Union involvement.
