CME applauds longer phase-in for ORPP – Calls for full pause

Published by Brad Fougere on February 16, 2016

Today's announcement that the government will delay the initial collection of the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP) for one year acknowledges concerns raised by CME that ORPP may be technically and financially challenging for manufacturers. Large companies will now register by January 1, 2017, but collections will not commence until 2018.

"We continue to call on Ontario to pause the implementation in light of the federal government’s commitment to review the Canada Pension Plan," said CME Vice President, Ontario Ian Howcroft. "The efforts made to harmonize collection with CPP are positive developments that reflect calls to avoid administrative duplication."

If the government intends to stay the course with ORPP implementation it will be important to expand the definition of comparability to include a broader range of capital accumulation plans and to provide financial offsets for SME’s that will be ultimately challenged to manage this new cost of doing business in Ontario.

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) is Canada’s leading trade and industry association and the voice of manufacturing and global business in Canada. The association directly represents more than 10,000 leading companies nationwide.

More than 85 per cent of CME’s members are small and medium-sized enterprises. As Canada’s leading business network, CME, through various initiatives including the establishment of the Canadian Manufacturing Coalition, touches more than 100,000 companies from coast to coast, engaged in manufacturing, global business and service-related industries.

CME’s membership network accounts for an estimated 82 per cent of total manufacturing production and 90 per cent of Canada’s exports.
