CME welcomes Government of Ontario legislative action against “Buy American”

Published by Marie Morden on February 21, 2018

TORONTO (February 21, 2018) – Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters is pleased the Government of Ontario is standing up for manufacturers by introducing retaliatory legislation in response to unfair government procurement practices. If passed, the Fairness in Procurement Bill, which was tabled yesterday, would allow Ontario to take responsive action to discriminatory measures by U.S. sub-national jurisdictions.

“We wish that this kind of legislation wasn’t necessary between two countries with such a long history of trade and co-operation like the U.S. and Canada,” said Dennis Darby, President & CEO of CME. “But too often U.S. Federal and State governments enact or threaten to enact measures to block our manufacturers from exporting goods and services into their procurement markets.”

“It is also a critical reminder of how important it is that government procurement issues are dealt with in the ongoing NAFTA re-negotiations,” added Darby. CME has called on the federal government to solve this irritant as part of its recommendations to modernize the agreement.
